The new version of The Color Purple has left many people confused. Many people thought this was a direct reboot of the original movie. It’s not. Instead, this is the film adaptation of the stage play that’s been a success over the past few years. However, the film has an all-star cast. Newcomer, Danielle Brooks, was joined by the likes of Fantasia, Taraji P. Henson, and Halle Bailey, among others. None of this was enough, though. The film only generated $5 million at the theaters.

The Color Purple was a classic movie. As a result, most people felt it didn’t need to be remade. But, the stage play was getting such good feedback that Oprah decided to go all-in on a reboot. To that end, she pulled all of her resources in order to make it happen. Not only did she partner with Warner Bros. to produce the movie, but also, she went out of pocket. Also, she tapped into the OWN network to generate interest for the movie. In total, there was $90 million spent to produce, and $40 million to market.

Despite a $90 million budget to produce the movie and $40 million to market it, the movie bombed. In the end, it only generated under $10 million. To be exact, The Color Purple‘s readaptation only generated $5 million at the box office. These numbers are underwhelming, saying the absolute least about things. As a result, the movie has been a complete failure, in terms of profit margin. However, a lot of women united to go to the theaters to watch the film.
