In late November, the full list of nominations/nominees were revealed by the Recording Academy for the 2021 GRAMMYs. There were plenty of snubs but the biggest one of all has been that The Weeknd was nominated at all. That came after a year where he arguably had the best one out of every artists in the world.
The Weeknd shortly sounded off on Twitter by calling the GRAMMYs “corrupt” and demanded transparency for himself and his fans. The Toronto native has just graced the cover of Billboard magazine with his XO team, which includes Wassim “Sal” Slaiby, La Mar C. Taylor, and Amir “Cash” Esmailian. Weeknd discussed the snub controversy here as he revealed that he was definitely surprised that this happened but seems to be over it at this point.
“Look, I personally don’t care anymore. I have three Grammys, which mean nothing to me now, obviously. It’s not like, ‘Oh, I want the Grammy!’ It’s just that this happened, and I’m down to get in front of the fire, as long as it never happens again. I suck at giving speeches anyways. Forget awards shows.”
The Weeknd also added that the GRAMMYS snub hit him out of nowhere. He also wondered what he did wrong for him to not get nominated at all.
“I use a sucker punch as an analogy. Because it just kind of hit me out of nowhere. I definitely felt … I felt things. I don’t know if it was sadness or anger. I think it was just confusion. I just wanted answers. Like, ‘What happened?’ We did everything right, I think. I’m not a cocky person. I’m not arrogant. People told me I was going to get nominated. The world told me. Like, ‘This is it; this is your year.’ We were all very confused.”
The Weeknd is coming off a year where he released his fourth studio album, ‘After Hours.’ This project debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart and contained the No. 1 chart-topping singles, “Blinding Lights” and “Heartless.” He will also be performing at Super Bowl LV during their halftime show on February 7.
