Tika Sumpter explains raising mixed-race daughter Ella with love

Tika Sumpter is known for her role in The Haves and the Have Nots. In addition, she is starring in the upcoming Knuckles movie. Not only is she making waves in Hollywood, but also at home as a dedicated mother. In a recent exclusive with PEOPLE, Sumpter opened up about the joys and challenges of raising her 7-year-old daughter, Ella-Loren, with husband Nicholas James. Their journey is one filled with intentional love, meaningful conversations, and a focus on embracing the unique identity that comes with being part of a mixed-race family.

A Family Grounded in Love and Education

Tika Sumpter and Nicholas James are deeply committed to ensuring that Ella grows up with a strong understanding of her heritage. The couple first met on the set of Tyler Perry’s long-running drama series The Haves and the Have Nots. As a result, their on-screen chemistry eventually blossomed into real-life love. They welcomed Ella in 2016 and later tied the knot in 2022. Their daughter proudly serving as their flower girl.

For Sumpter and James, educating Ella about her mixed-race identity is not just a responsibility but a passion.

“We’re already talking to Ella about race,” Sumpter shared with PEOPLE. “Nick actually went to the library the other day and got a bunch of books on Pharaohs and Africa, and then one on civil rights. He’s reading this civil rights book out loud and he’s like, ‘This is infuriating!’ And Ella can’t even imagine that time. She’s like, ‘How could people do such a thing?'”

These conversations, while challenging, are handled with care and sensitivity. Sumpter and James are determined to equip Ella with the knowledge she needs to navigate the world. Also, they are ensuring she feels secure in her identity.

“You don’t want to scare her, but you want to inform her in a way that is age-appropriate,” Sumpter explained.

Thus, showing the delicate balance they strive to maintain.

Ella’s Awareness of Her Unique Identity

At just 7 years old, Ella is already showing a deep awareness of her identity as the daughter of a mixed-race couple. Recently, she made a poignant comment that touched both of her parents deeply.

“One day she said, ‘I’m just so happy that you guys can be together nowadays,'” Sumpter recalled.

She was reflecting on how Ella alluded to the painful history of interracial marriages in the United States.

This moment was particularly moving for Sumpter. She sees it as a testament to Ella’s growing understanding of the world around her.

“I was like, ‘Girl. You are so aware,'” Sumpter said.

As a result, she was nearly moved to tears by her daughter’s sensitivity. When it comes to addressing Ella’s questions about her own identity, Sumpter offers reassurance and love:

“I’m just like, ‘You are both.’ I’m super grateful that she feels like she’s a part of both of us. She doesn’t have to choose at all.”

Raising a Child in Generation Alpha

Sumpter also reflected on the generational differences that are shaping how children today perceive race and identity. Ella is part of Generation Alpha, a group that Sumpter believes is growing up in a much more accepting and inclusive world.

“I just feel like they’re growing up in such a different world,” Sumpter observed. “They’re just more accepting, for everyone to be whoever they are. And they’re so loving.”

This new reality is something that Sumpter and James are excited to be part of. Moreover, they are excited as they raise a daughter who embodies the blend of their diverse backgrounds. Ella’s generation, they believe, is better equipped to embrace diversity and inclusivity. Thus, making the world a more welcoming place for all.

Adventures of Curiosity Cove

Drawing from her experiences as a mother and her desire to create a nurturing environment for children, Tika Sumpter and Nicholas James have launched a new children’s podcast, Adventures of Curiosity Cove. The podcast debuts on September 9. It features a special series called Ella the Curious. That series is inspired by their daughter’s natural curiosity and her journey of self-discovery.

“I created a series within Adventures of Curiosity Cove called ‘Ella the Curious’ about this little girl just trying to figure her life out through her drawings and school and all the things,” Sumpter explained.

The podcast aims to provide a special place for children, encouraging them to explore their identities and the world around them with an open mind and a loving heart.

Building a Legacy of Love and Understanding

For Tika Sumpter and Nicholas James, raising Ella is about more than just navigating the complexities of a mixed-race identity. It’s about building a legacy of love, understanding, and acceptance. They are committed to ensuring that Ella feels connected to both sides of her heritage. Also, Sumpter and James are committed to empowering her to be proud of who she is.

This journey of intentional parenting is one that Sumpter and James are navigating with grace, determination, and a deep sense of purpose. As they continue to guide Ella through the challenges and joys of growing up, they are also creating content that reflects their values and beliefs. So, this is content that they hope will inspire not just their daughter, but children everywhere.
