Vacationing parents drown in Florida rip current tragedy
A family vacation turned tragic on Thursday. Two parents from Pennsylvania drowned after being caught in a powerful rip current at Stuart Beach. The Martin County Sheriff’s Office (MCSO) identified the victims as Brian Warter and Erica Wishard. Both were parents to three children each.
The incident occurred around 1:30 p.m. near the Hutchinson Island Resort by Marriott. According to Chief Deputy John Budensiek, Warter and Wishard were part of a family of eight enjoying their time on the beach. When they were pulled into the dangerous waters, they lost their lives. As a result, their children witnessed the harrowing scene. So, they attempted to call 911 for help.
“It’s heartbreaking. These kids are in their teens and had to watch their parents struggle in the water and the subsequent rescue efforts,” Budensiek stated.
Lifeguards from Jensen Beach and Stuart responded swiftly to the emergency. The nearest lifeguard station was about 400-500 feet from the incident location. Martin County Fire Rescue (MCFR) reported that Warter and Wishard were unconscious when they were retrieved from the water. Despite lifeguards performing CPR and rushing them to Martin North Hospital. There, both parents were pronounced dead.
County authorities had raised single red flags earlier that day. Thus, indicating rough surf conditions. However, after the incident, double red flags were flown, closing the water to the public due to the severe risk.
Chief Joe Lobosco of MCFR emphasized the importance of public awareness regarding beach safety.
“We have protocols in place and use various means to inform the public about dangerous conditions, especially when lifeguards are not immediately present,” Lobosco noted.
The tragic loss has left the children traumatized and the community in mourning, highlighting the perilous nature of rip currents and the critical need for beachgoers to heed warnings and practice water safety.
