In a dramatic turn of events, the Jamaica Court of Appeal has ordered the release of dancehall superstar Vybz Kartel and his three co-defendants after a prolonged legal struggle. The court’s decision, announced Wednesday, comes as a major victory for Kartel, whose real name is Adidja Palmer, following years of incarceration related to the 2011 murder of Clive “Lizard” Williams.
The unanimous ruling against a retrial highlights the court’s recognition of the severe psychological and health impacts endured by Kartel. Justice Marva McDonald-Bishop emphasized that a new trial was not in the interest of justice, given the adverse conditions and deteriorating health of the appellants. Kartel’s defense has long criticized the harsh conditions of his imprisonment, including inadequate sanitation and worsening health due to Graves’ Disease.
Kartel, along with Shawn Campbell, Kahira Jones, and Andre St. John, was convicted in 2014 based on circumstantial evidence and unreliable witness testimony. Despite his claims of innocence, their convictions faced multiple appeals until the British Privy Council intervened earlier this year, citing juror misconduct.
Meanwhile, Vybz has since been previewing new music, on social media. This comes after releasing his “Party With Me” project, in late May. He is also enjoying quality time with his girlfriend.
