White woman becomes first female HBCU football player
The past decade has seen a renewed interest in the HBCUs, primarily because many of them were on the verge of going out of business. As a result, many prominent high school athletes committed to HBCUs, as opposed to going to the more traditionally known schools. This, plus the push for HBCUs, have revived interest in the historically Black colleges and universities. Now, Jackson State University has made history with the first woman on their football team. In a sense of irony, the woman is White.
Deion Sanders put Jackson State University on the map. Over the past few years, Sanders served as the head coach of their football program. As a result, Jackson State became one of the top college football teams in the nation. In addition, JSU had national media attention for the first time in the school’s history. Most people didn’t believe Sanders would even make a good coach. However, he proved them wrong. Unfortunately for Jackson State, Sanders left for Colorado.
Jackson State University’s football program is not receiving the same attention that it did when they had Deion Sanders coaching. However, the football program is still receiving quite a lot of attention. Once again, JSU has made history. Their football program has welcomed the first woman to play on an HBCU’s football team. Ironically, the woman happens to be White, and this is causing quite the stir on social media.
