Amanda Alicia Chapin, 51, a Wisconsin woman, faces up to 12.5 years in prison. She admitted she tried to poison her veterinarian husband, Gary Chapin, 71, with his own supply of animal euthanasia drugs. Chapin pled no contest to reckless endangerment charges in court on Friday, according to reports.
Amanda met Gary online and married him in March 2022. Shortly after their marriage, she convinced Gary to add her name to the deed of his house. Also, she forged his son’s signature to gain power of attorney. Within two weeks of securing her name on the deed, Amanda began lacing Gary’s morning coffee with stolen barbiturates from his veterinary supplies.
In August 2022, after three doses, Gary fell into a coma. Amanda waited three hours to call 911. He was hospitalized, where doctors found the lethal drugs in his system. As a result, prompting an investigation by the police. Four days later, Gary emerged from the coma and swiftly filed for divorce. His son also secured a restraining order against Amanda.
Amanda violated the restraining order in September by sending Gary a desperate email with a suicide note, declaring her love for him. This attempt to reconcile failed, leading to her arrest and charges of attempted murder, which were later reduced to first-degree reckless endangerment under a plea deal.
Amanda Chapin will be sentenced on July 15 and could face up to 12.5 years in prison.
