Will Kanye move the entire GOOD Music roster to Def Jam?

Aside from being known as one of the most impressive rappers in hip hop, Kanye West has also built a reputation for being outspoken. But, outside of himself, Kanye took the time to create his own label, GOOD Music.

As a producer, West worked with a number of artists. Instead of simply accepting the role of official producer for these artists, Kanye West decided to create his own record label to put these artists on and work out deals with their existing labels.

Launched in 2004, GOOD Music’s roster consists of Common, John Legend, Kid Cudi, Consequence, and Mr Hudson. Of course, Kanye West, himself, is also signed to the label. The label has no exclusive distribution deals in place.

GOOD Music is currently distributed by Roc-A-Fella Records, Geffen Records, Sony Records, and Universal Records. Kanye West has become the top act on both Roc-A-Fella and Def Jam, Roc’s distributor. The situation at Roc-A-Fella is a bit strange because Kanye is one of two artists on the label, leading some to believe that it will be shut down before the end of the year.

Throughout the year of 2009, the roster of Def Jam has dwindled. Kanye is one of only a few remaining acts on the label. Of all of the hip hop labels, GOOD Music is having tremendous success. The label is actually doing better than Def Jam.

GOOD Music may be doing better than Def Jam, but Def Jam is the bigger label and they own the rights to Kanye West. The way that Def Jam has been struggling, it would not be a stretch to imagine them offering Kanye a big contract and an executive role in exchange for distributing all of GOOD Music’s releases.

If Def Jam were to reach an exclusive deal with GOOD Music, they would become home to Common, Kid Cudi, John Legend, and Consequence. That would translate into massive airplay and better sales for the struggling label. GOOD Music/Def Jam, fantasy or reality?
