By 2001, Irv Gotti found the winning formula with Ja Rule and Ashanti, but he didn’t officially unveil them until 2002. He was so confident in this new sound, he paired them with Fat Joe for his fourth album. At this time, Fat Joe revisited his Jealous Ones Envy LP with Jealous Ones Still Envy.
Subtitled J.O.S.E., Fat Joe reached a new peak with this album. The album was led by the smash, “We Thuggin,” featuring R. Kelly. But, Fat Joe made noise on Billboard with the second single, “What’s Luv?,” featuring Ashanti and Ja Rule (in uncredited background vocals).
The song was released in January of 2002 and remained on the charts well into June of that same year. To date, “What’s Luv?” is Fat Joe’s most-successful single and the music video features none other than Maia Campbell, who talked to Hip Hop Vibe about doing this video in 2013. This week, we decided to reflect on this single for the Wednesday Throwback.
