Certain years were good for hip hop and overall urban music and 1996 was one of them. Looking back on it, 1996 was the only year where Tupac, Nas, and Jay-Z all dropped new albums. This was also when Lost Boyz made their debut, releasing the classic “Renee” single.

“Renee” was the story of a man who found love and lost it to a stray bullet all in a matter of weeks, as Mr. Cheeks narrated. Released in early 1996, “Renee” was the first single off Lost Boyz’ debut album, Legal Drug Money. The song was also used for the Don’t Be A Menace to South Central While Drinking Your Juice In The Hood soundtrack.

Janet Jackson’s “Funny How Time Flies (When You’re Having Fun)” is sampled for the “Renee” single. The song originally peaked at number 33 on Billboard Hot 100, marking Lost Boyz’ only top 40 hit. Eighteen years later, Lost Boyz’ hit is revisited as the Wednesday Throwback.
