Admittedly, DJ Khaled didn’t have his best year in 2015 and it made him frustrated. Usually, DJ Khaled is the most-positive guy in the room, but he admitted that he shared his frustration with others. But, he realized he had the power to change things on his own.
Starting on Snapchat, DJ Khaled began sharing positive messages that made people take notice. Soon, he started hinting at major deals being in the works. When 2016 began, DJ Khaled announced his new deals with Apple Music, Roc Nation, and Epic Records.
Immediately, DJ Khaled followed this up with being the first name added to Beyonce’s “Formation” tour. Serving as the opening act, Khaled may have opened the door for Yo Gotti to also join Roc Nation. Whether it was commercials or music, DJ Khaled was there, representing for hip hop.
Honestly, it would have been easy to give Drake his fourth-straight Artist of the Year look, but DJ Khaled really put in the groundwork to make it happen for himself. He brought his positive vibes to Yo Gotti’s “Down In The DM” music video and didn’t slow down. Soon, DJ Khaled was all over “Good Morning America” and other mainstream places.
The entire time, DJ Khaled promoted the power of self and positive energy, as he and L.A. Reid helped finally put his label, We The Best Music Group, on top of the game, with Kent Jones having breakout success in the summer. A price came with Ace Hood speaking out against Khaled, but the Miami DJ handled it all with class. Since he is on top of the game, it would have been easy for him to try and embarrass his former artist, but he didn’t and both had wins.
But, DJ Khaled rose to the top and managed to serve the masses on a near-daily basis. He often called things on social media a “MAJOR KEY ALERT,” so it made sense for Major Key to be the title of his album. Finally, after a decade of putting albums out, Khaled had an album top the Billboard 200 and finally got things to line up, introducing the album with “For Free,” featuring Drake.
DJ Khaled moved into the summer and took over with “I Got The Keys,” featuring Future and Jay Z, doing what he didn’t in 2014 in getting Hov for a video. But, since Jay Z is his manager, even that wasn’t terribly hard work for him, as he turned everything all the way around. At this point, it goes without saying, DJ Khaled is Hip Hop Vibe’s Artist of the Year for the year of 2016.
