In 1998, Jay-Z became the biggest rapper on the planet. After two years, he finally broke through, and in a big way. Vol. 2… Hard Knock Life became the highest-selling rap album of the year. The album sold 5 million copies, in the US, alone, in 1998. This led to the highest-grossing tour of all-time, the Hard Knock Life Tour.

Jay-Z, alongside Dame Dash and Kareem “Biggs” Burke, turned Roc-A-Fella Records into a million-dollar entity. In 1997, they entered a joint venture with Def Jam. In this deal, they sold a $10 million stake to the company. By 1998, Hov’s net worth ballooned to $69 million. Years later, he’d wind up running Def Jam, and becoming much wealthier, via Roc Nation.

Most consider Jay-Z among the most-successful rappers of all-time. Definitely, “Jigga What, Jigga Who” played a part in this. The song is subtitled “Originators 99,” the updated version of Jaz-O’s track. He is featured on the song, alongside Amil. Together, the two deliver straight lyricism. Meanwhile, Amil delivers a classic hook. This was one of the album’s biggest singles.

Between 1996 and 2003, Jay-Z released a new album every year. He had countless hits, along the way.
