Quietly, the Boston Celtics have returned to the top of the NBA’s East standings. Historically, the Celtics have always been one of the NBA’s best teams. A testament to the Celtics’ success, the 1990s were the only decade when the franchise didn’t appear in the NBA Finals. Most of the 1990s and the 2000s saw the Celtics struggle, as a franchise, but the 2007 trades brought the Celtics back to prominence.
The Celtics unexpectedly returned to contention, when Isaiah Thomas became a franchise player. His 2017 hip injury forever changed things and he was traded for Kyrie Irving. On paper, that was a huge coup, but Kyrie Irving and Gordon Hayward were constantly injured. Still, the Celtics contended, as Jaylen Brown stepped up, as he and Jayson Tatum formed a duo that pushed LeBron to seven games.
Jaylen Brown and Jayson Tatum have been given the keys to the franchise. Management has decided they are the franchise. After a slow start, they have the Celtics in the conversation. Brown and Tatum’s Celtics are right there with the Heat, Bulls, Sixers, Bucks, and Cavaliers. Last night, the Celtics beat the Atlanta Hawks, but lost Jaylen Brown to an ankle injury. Understandably, he went down with tears.
