NBC Host, Megyn Kelly, Faces Backlash For Comments On White People Wearing Blackface For Halloween: “Back when I was a kid, that was ok as long as you were dressing up as a character“ [VIDEO]

Today Show host, Megyn Kelly, is facing backlash as she questioned what was the big deal about white people wearing blackface for Halloween.

In the opening minutes of her morning show, Megyn Kelly Today, she and co-hosts discuss how universities are cracking down on costumes that are deemed inappropriate and/or offensive. She says:

“You do get in trouble if you are a white person who puts on blackface on Halloween, or a black person who puts on whiteface for Halloween. Back when I was a kid, that was O.K., as long as you were dressing up as a character.”

She then went on to talk about how a white cast member of Real Housewives Of New York receives backlash for dressing up as Diana Ross, complete with an Afro and darker skin. Kelly said:

“She dressed as Diana Ross, and she made her skin look darker than it really is. And people said that that was racist. And I don’t know, I felt like, who doesn’t love Diana Ross?”

Girl what?

Of course, Kelly has issued an email apology to her colleagues. She wrote:

“I realize now that such behavior is indeed wrong, and I am sorry. The history of blackface in our culture is abhorrent; the wounds too deep. I’ve never been a ‘pc’ kind of person — but I understand that we do need to be more sensitive in this day and age.”

“Particularly on race and ethnicity issues which, far from being healed, have been exacerbated in our politics over the past year. This is a time for more understanding, love, sensitivity and honor, and I want to be part of that.”

It’s simple. White people in blackface is OFFENSIVE. It’s historically RACIST. You can dress up as whoever you want to for Halloween, but you don’t have to paint your skin brown or black. Everyone can have a great, unproblematic Halloween if we just abide by those rules.
