With international travel easier than ever and Wi-Fi making it possible to connect with anyone anywhere, it is less about where one is from and more about where they are at. Lil Six is from Texas, but is currently located in Fayetteville, North Carolina. A prominent Army town, home to Fort Bragg, Fayetteville is full of “out-of-towners.”
Lil Six made the most out of his relocation and began actively pursuing his career in rap. It has become easy to be a “rapper,” with YouTube and the ability to record off laptops. But, to really gain traction is a bit tougher. Performing alongside the likes of Trina and Mims, Lil Six is what many would consider a serious artist.
Known locally for his “Six on a Bean” hit, Lil Six is putting on for local Fayetteville label, Hucks Entertainment. As his profile continues to rise, Lil Six watches his fan base broaden, which has made him Hip Hop Vibe’s latest On the Rise artist. During his interview, Lil Six spoke on how he is making a name for himself.

You are originally from Texas, but grew up in Fayetteville, NC? Yes, I have been in and out of Fayetteville most my life. I’m what you call an Army brat, but I been here since 96.
How would you best describe growing up in a military town? Fort Bragg is the military town, Fayetteville is the city. It’s a big difference. There’s nothing handed to you as a civilian.
Which area do you feel has had the biggest impact on you, as a rapper? Fayettville, NC, I learned damn near everything I rap about from here. All of my struggles dealing with life’s unexpectedness all the way down to the grind.
Can you talk about how the “Six on the Bean” single came together? NO, naw I’m just playing. “Six on a Bean” was just suppose to be one of my fun songs. I didn’t expect for everybody to embrace that single. It was suppose to be my magic word to get the crowd hype, but thanks to my CEO, people see me they always holla “six on a bean.” So, I just took it and ran with it.
What type of impact do you feel the song has had, locally? Truthfully, surprisingly like I said I didn’t expect for it to get as big as it did. This is the song that everybody knows me for and I get booked to perform it all the time they love it. Just the energy that comes from the performance is electric in itself.
With the mixtape coming soon, how do you feel the anticipation is for it? People say they ready for it, but word on the street is that they really want me back on stage. They don’t care what songs I do as long as I’m giving them something they can relate to and they can see the energy involved in it.
There are a lot of up-and-coming rappers in the Carolinas, where would you rank yourself? I’ve been doing this six years and you see a lot people and things come and go. Now I’m with a solid brand HUCK’S ENTERTAINMENT and I finally have a movement that’s growing with me. As far as my rank goes I would like to leave that up to the fans as they are the ones who matter most. I have done over six projects so far so I would like to believe I’m in the top tier of my city.
How important do you feel it is for artists to pick the right record label? All I got to say is make sure you pick the right one, because if not you might end up selling your soul, I’m just saying.
What is the best way to describe the relationship between you and Hucks Entertainment? Me and Huck are closer than most family members are. Our kids know each other and our families are even close. If the music doesn’t work out between myself and Huck’s Entertainment it will always be a relationship between us. We share similar struggles so we will always be family.
As an independent artist who has toured with the likes of Trina and Mims, what type of advantage do you feel you have over other up-and-coming artists? I bring energy and animation with the videos and on stage. I give always give you a show and I realize people might say that I’m a hype lil’ rapper, but I’m not, I’m just an entertainer trying to make a living off my music.
