On this day in hip hop, May 16th, 1990, Warner Bros. Records released the hit single “We’re All In The Same Gang” by The West Coast All-Stars on this day in 1990. Gang tensions in Los Angeles reached new heights during the gangsta rap era. Bloods and Crips throughout the city were killing each other.

Though the gang activity inspired the music, the roles were soon reversed and the music was inspiring the violence. Since most kids, especially those in the inner cities, look up to rappers, Warner Bros. Records got many of the biggest names together. They came together for the NBA-inspired West Coast Rap All-Stars/

The anti-gang violence track featured a musical collective comprised of the who’s who of West Coast hip-hop including MC Hammer, Ice-T, Young MC, Miche’le, Def Jef, JJ Fad, Above The Law, Tone Loc, Oaktown 3.5.7, Body & Soul featuring Pump It Up’s Dee Barnes, Digital Underground, King Tee as well as NWA’s Eazy-E, MC Ren and Dr. Dre, who produced the track.
