Brooklyn initially was put on the map by The Notorious B.I.G. However, Jay-Z led the borough of Brooklyn to new heights. Fabolous, the protege of DJ Clue, the official DJ for the roster of Roc-A-Fella Records, was hailed as the second coming of Jay-Z. Inspired by both B.I.G. and Jay-Z, Fabolous established his own legacy.
In 2004, Fabolous released his third album, Real Talk, which was a sharp turn from his previous albums. Criticized for only making music that catered to female audiences, Fab made an album full of street anthems. However, Fabolous remained true to himself with his single, “Baby,” with Mike Shorey.
Though “Baby” sounded nothing like the music The Notorious B.I.G. was known for, it contained a sample of his lyrics. In the chorus, Mike Shorey sang “I see some ladies tonight that should be havin’ my baby.” “Baby” directly sampled The Notorious B.I.G.’s hit single, “Big Poppa.”
