The dominance Atlanta has had over hip hop is iconic. No city has ran the game as long as the A and it’s birthed all kinds of genres within hip hop. Crunk music took over the city and then it birthed snap music, which has since almost gone irrelevant. But, when snap music was a thing, Yung Joc was the face of it. He took the game over, during the summer of 2006, with “It’s Goin’ Down.”

People try to write Yung Joc off, but he had a run. From 2006 to 2008, Yung Joc was consistently in the top ten, in terms of the most popular rappers in the game. Soulja Boy emerged in 2007 and he turned snap music into ringtone rap. While ringtone rap existed before Soulja Boy, he was the first rapper to make money from it. After 2008, Yung Joc faded into irrelevance, while Soulja Boy made history.

Soulja Boy took his career into his own hands, in 2011, and he hasn’t slowed down since. The Atlanta rapper reinvented himself as a media personality, and is now a tech mogul. Almost daily, Soulja Boy releases new music. He has released his single, “Goin Down,” referencing Yung Joc in the hook, and Soulja Boy has the music video out now.
