YRS Jerzy’s Wednesday Throwback: Lil Wayne ft. Static Major – “Lollipop”

Back in 2008, the rap game was still heavily dominated by a post-retirement Jay Z and 50 Cent. While both were losing their luster, hip hop was hesitant to get behind Lil Wayne. His features were blowing up and his mixtape success was insane, but he hadn’t quite gotten there.
Lil Wayne had not proven he could make a hit record, on his own, so he was facing pressure. Plus, his Young Money imprint was on the verge of being a joke. It all turned around with “Lollipop,” the official first single from the often delayed Tha Carter III.
Taking over Las Vegas, Lil Wayne had Deelishis, Travis Barker, Tyga, Birdman, the song’s producer, Jim Jonsin, and many other big names in the video. Reflecting to more promising times, Lil Wayne’s “Lollipop” is this week’s Wednesday Throwback. Also, of course, rest in peace to Static Major, who died a week before the song premiered.
