Joel Embiid gets emotional after winning 2023 NBA MVP Award
Joel Embiid was not expected to become the Philadelphia 76ers’ franchise player. Ben Simmons was supposed to be that guy, but Embiid is the one who took that role. In an odd turn of events, Simmons forced himself off the Sixers’ roster. As a result, Joel Embiid truly took over the role of franchise player. In 2022, he had an MVP caliber season, as he willed Philadelphia to victories, behind his historic scoring. This season, Joel Embiid finally won the NBA’s regular season MVP award.
Joel Embiid came into the 2023 season on a mission. Each year, since 2018, Embiid has led the Philadelphia 76ers to the playoffs. First, they lost to the Celtics in the second round in 2018. After that, Embiid led Philly to a classic seven game series against the Toronto Raptors. Losing to Kawhi’s Raptors ended Philly’s momentum and they were swept in the first round by Boson. In 2021, they were infamously upset by the Atlanta Hawks.
Joel Embiid has really stepped his game up, these past two seasons. After the Sixers’ six game loss to the Miami Heat, last season, Embiid really went to work. Not only was he upset over the playoff disappointments, but he also felt he deserved the MVP award. On May 2, 2023, the results for the MVP award race ended with Embiid as the winner. Afterward, he was with his teammates, where he cried tears of joy, as he accepted the MVP award.
