In the case of Ja Rule, he was actually writing R&B records. However, it was clear those guys could not actually sing.

However, Nicki Minaj broke the door down, when “Your Love” hit the radio. On this song, Nicki Minaj rapped, but she also sang. Unlike when most rappers harmonize, Nicki Minaj showed that she could truly sing. This was followed by Nicki dropping actual R&B records.
Nicki Minaj is more than just a rapper, or a singer. Above all, Nicki Minaj is a music lover. She listens to music, she makes music, and she enjoys music. As a result, Nicki Minaj has a vested interest in the direction music is taking. Many artists looked at people like Nicki Minaj and they also rap and sing. However, it is now undetectable whether a rapper is singing, or if a singer is rapping. Much of this is due to most singers not singing. As a result, Nicki Minaj called this out on Twitter.
