Alabama prison guard arrested for smuggling Twix to inmate

A security incident at Fountain Correctional Facility in Atmore, Alabama, has led to the arrest of a private security guard. Thus, spotlighting ongoing issues with prison contraband. Shemiria Jackson, the guard in question, was arrested this Wednesday. She was charged with third-degree promoting prison contraband after allegedly providing a Twix candy bar to an inmate.

The Alabama Department of Corrections (ADOC) reported that the incident occurred on Monday. It was uncovered during a routine review of surveillance footage. Jackson was subsequently taken into custody. Currently, she is being held at Escambia County Jail, awaiting further proceedings.

The charge of promoting prison contraband, although typically associated with more dangerous items, underscores the strict regulations regarding unauthorized item exchanges within correctional facilities. Even seemingly harmless objects like candy bars can lead to charges if passed to inmates without proper authorization.

ADOC’s Law Enforcement Services Division is actively investigating the case to determine if further contraband has been smuggled into the facility. Also, to assess the full scope of Jackson’s involvement. This incident raises questions about the security measures and internal controls within state correctional facilities.

As of now, Jackson’s employment status with the private security firm contracted by the prison remains uncertain. Not only does the case have legal ramifications, but also impacts the reputational standards of private security operations in state correctional systems.

This arrest serves as a reminder of the ongoing challenges faced by correctional facilities in maintaining security and integrity, prompting a review of protocols to prevent similar incidents in the future.
