It’s been a little over a week since A$AP Rocky was arrested in Sweden for an alleged assault, that was caught on camera. Swedish authorities are planning to hold A$AP and his crew for two weeks while they investigate.
Details surrounding A$AP’s inhumane jail conditions have been revealed to the public, and many of his famous friends have called for his release. Rappers like, T.I., Tyler The Creator, and Schoolboy Q have vowed to never visit the country again.
While some people are calling for A$AP’s release through a petition, others recall when A$AP turned a blind eye to racial injustices happening right here in America.
In a 2015 interview with Timeout, he discussed Ferguson and why he doesn’t feel the need to be a social activist.
He goes into the song “Dreams,” spitting, “I just had an epic dream like Dr. King / Police brutality was on my TV screen—I specified ‘TV’ because I was in London. Why would I feel compelled to rap about Ferguson? I’m not about to say that I was down there throwing rocks at motherf*ckers, getting pepper-sprayed. I’d be lying. Is it because I’m black? What the f*ck, am I Al Sharpton now?”
He halts the electronic skateboard and looks me in the eye. “I’m A$AP Rocky. I did not sign up to be no political activist. I wanna talk about my motherf*ckin’ lean, my best friend dying, girls, my jiggy fashion and my inspirations in drugs. I live in f*cking Soho and Beverly Hills. I can’t relate. I go back to Harlem, it’s not the same. It’s a sad story. I gotta tell you the truth. I’m in the studio, I’m in fashion houses, I’m in these b*tches’ drawers. I’m not doing anything outside of that. That’s my life. These people need to leave me the f*ck alone.”
A$AP has since recanted some of his statements and said that all of this social injustice makes him sick.
Social media users quickly took to twitter to remind everyone of what A$AP had to say in his former interview and how those words have come back to haunt him in his current legal troubles.
One person tweeted:
“ASAP Rocky said Black issues don’t mean anything to him because he’s rich and famous, now he’s locked up in Sweden in inhumane conditions for defending himself.
Y’all will learn that being Black never stops no matter what one day.“
Please note that we are in no way, shape, or form implying that A$AP deserves to be in a Swedish prison. No one deserves to be locked up in unsanitary conditions. This is just a simple reminder that, it doesn’t matter where you go, how rich you are, what designer clothing you wear, or where you live…black issues can still be YOUR issues. They still affect you. The same issues ASAP was so against standing up against are the same issues folks are using to speak against his arrest.
