Brittney Griner found guilty in Russian drug trial facing nine and half years in prison.

Brittney Griner’s trial is turning for the worst with all signs pointing to prison time. In February of this year, she was arrested at the Sheremetyveo International Airport near Moscow on drug charges. Brittney is accused of carrying vape cartridges containing hashish oil, which is illegal in Russia. Brittney who has remained in custody since February was found guilty on drug charges in a Moscow court earlier Thursday. The judge ruling over the trail found Brittney had criminal intent while being guilty of smuggling and storing illegal drugs.

Brittney’s fiancé, family and multiple celebrities have since voiced their support in Brittney’s return. Brittney who is a WNBA star has played overseas in Russia for several years prior, with this being her first incident. After multiple attempts and a handwritten letter urging President Biden to “free her”, Biden claimed he would help the basketball star. A potential trade offered by President Joe Biden in return for Brittney’s release was mentioned earlier in July. However, the Biden Administration states the offer is up to Russian courts to consider.

Brittney Griner’s case has gained worldwide attention, yet the urgency to free her seems stagnant. As the trial continues, Brittney’s freedom continues to remain unknown.
