California Gov. Gavin Newsom bans Walgreens in California due to recent abortion stance
California stops business with Walgreens due to abortion stance
As the war on abortion and birth control continue, a West Coast state makes a powerful move on the issue. In a shocking announcement Monday, California Gov. Gavin Newsom stops business with Walgreens in response to their abortion stance. The second largest pharmacy in the U.S made the bold decision to stop distributing abortion medication by mail to more than twenty states. Walgreens will stop dispensing the drug mifepristone, which is used for miscarriages and more than half of U.S abortions. The statement left people confused and upset, specifically the state of California where abortion is legal. Gov. Gavin, posted a tweet expressing his feelings towards the ban and confirming the cancellation of the business relationship in the state.
This news is the latest result of the U.S Supreme Court overturning Roe v. Wade in June of 2022. The decision allowed states to have control over banning abortion and certain contraception methods. Following the decision, each state is assigned to the following categories of Expanded Access, Protected, Not Protected, Hostile and Illegal. As more states and health officials are challenging this motion, the conversation around safe abortions and a women’s right to choose continues to be a major topic. According to the CDC, the number of abortions has decreased drastically since the 1990’s. Despite this information, the current fight for eliminating the procedure continues.
Gov. Gavin gave a statement to CBS News stating “California is reviewing all relationships between Walgreens and the state,” earlier this week. His decision is one sparking conversations in other states where abortion is still legal.
