Carmelo Anthony announces his retirement from playing basketball
Carmelo Anthony last played professional basketball for the Los Angeles Lakers, during a very uneven season. Prior to this, Anthony sat out over a year from playing basketball. With the Portland Trail Blazers, Carmelo got his chance to play again. During the bubble, Anthony posted respectable numbers against the Lakers in a first round loss. After that, the Blazers took a first round loss to Anthony’s former team, the Nuggets. In 2021, he signed with the Lakers and played his last game in 2022. This morning, he shared a heartfelt video, where he announced he is retiring.
Carmelo Anthony was the third overall draft pick in the 2003 NBA Draft. Chosen by the Denver Nuggets, he immediately turned them into contenders. For well over a decade, the Nuggets were one of the NBA’s worst teams. Behind Anthony’s play, the Nuggets became perennial playoff contenders. After five straight losses in the first round, Carmelo led the Nuggets to the 2009 Western Conference Finals. In turn, they lost to Kobe Bryant’s Lakers in six games.
Carmelo Anthony left the Denver Nuggets via a midseason trade in 2011. After that, he slowly morphed into a journeyman. Still, Melo is known for his prolific scoring. Each team he played for, he definitely filled up the scoring totals. However, with his age, several teams passed on his services. After all, he never had much postseason success. He was a role player with the 2022 Lakers. For the past year, he has sat out. As a result, he retired this morning, passing the torch to his son, Ky Anthony.
