Donald Glover said he wanted “Atlanta” to end after season 2
The third season of “Atlanta” is finally premiering on March 24, on FX. Episodes will also be available to stream on Hulu. Several teaser trailers have been released as well, in anticipation of the first new season of Atlanta, since season 2 concluded, back in May 2018.
Yesterday, FX chairman John Landgraf said at Atlanta’s TCA panel, that Atlanta would officially end, after season 4. Season 4 is set to premiere sometime this fall. This came as a surprise to many fans, considering how popular Atlanta has been, since originally airing, back in the fall of 2016.
“The fourth and final season is slated to debut in the same manner this fall,” Landgraf said. “The new season is everything you’ve come to expect from ‘Atlanta,’ which is to say, expect the unexpected. Sit back and enjoy the trip.”
Donald Glover, who plays the role of Earn, who is Paper Boi’s manager in the show, also went on to reveal that he’s satisfied at four seasons being enough. In fact, Glover, announced that he was hoping for Atlanta to conclude after two seasons.
“To be honest I wanted to end it at Season 2,” Glover explained. “Death is natural…when the conditions are right for something, they happen, and when the conditions aren’t right they don’t happen. Things start to get weird…you can’t do too much. The story was always supposed to be what it was and the story, it really was us. It was great, all of that came out this season and it ends perfectly.”
Zazie Beetz (who plays Van) and Brian Tyree Henry (Paper Boi), were also both fine with Atlanta being finished, after the fourth season.
“I’m glad i knew it was ending because then I could lean into the relationships knowing this was my last chance to play Van,” said Beetz. “I think Van changed my life. I’m gad I had the opportunity to…put [her] in the back for now.”
“That’s the great part of coming to an end, it’s in the ethos,” added Henry. “It’s up there. You can imagine anything you want to. You go to high school, it’s four years. You go to college, it’s four years. This is in our own essence like a graduation.”
