Yesterday, Drake made news over his summer single, “Marvin’s Room.” Ericka Lee, a woman who claimed to be an ex-girlfriend of Drake’s, said she wrote the hook of the song. “Marvin’s Room” proved to be one of the more popular songs from the Toronto rapper, as fans waited on the release of Take Care. Lee claimed to be the other voice, which talks to Drake on the phone toward the end of the song.
Ericka Lee is suing for royalties from the song and claimed Drake offered her $50,000 in hush money, along with %4 royalty from the song. Lee claims the hush money stems from a threatening phone call Drake gave her when he learned she was suing. According to Ericka Lee, she and Drake dated from early 2010, until the summer of 2011, with their relationship abruptly ending after “Marvin’s Room.”
With Ericka Lee’s lawsuit against Drake making news, Drake has issued an official statement about the situation. Speaking with XXL, Drake’s spokesperson said “This claim is entirely without merit and our client has not engaged in any wrongful conduct. Ericka Lee consented to the use of her voice in the song ‘Marvin’s Room’ prior to its release. Lee asked only for the credit she received as ‘Syren Lyric Muse,’ and she did not ask for any compensation. It was only after she retained a lawyer that there was a demand for payment. Drake tried for months to resolve the matter amicably, and he now looks forward to being vindicated in court.”
