The Los Angeles hip hop scene is full of new energy and the Compton area is providing the bulk of the new energy. Compton is home to both Kendrick Lamar and Tyga, both of which have enjoyed much success over the past year. For well over two decades, Compton has contributed much to the overall hip hop community.

In the 1980s, Compton hip hop was put on the map with Eazy-E and NWA, which consisted of the likes of Dr. Dre and Ice Cube. Though the group would split, their influence carried over well into the 1990s and 2000s. Had Eazy-E lived, his legacy would have continued, but Dr. Dre and Ice Cube have continued to enjoy much success.

Compton has remained relevant, in recent years, through the efforts of Game, who had become the lone representative of Los Angeles at one point. Now, Los Angeles has several new rappers making hit records. Kendrick Lamar is currently at the forefront of this movement and he spoke with VEVO Lift about his past, growing up in Compton.
