All eyes are on Kendrick Lamar, as he is the biggest artist coming from the West Coast, more specifically Compton. The city has already bred Eazy-E, Dr. Dre, Game, and now the city is going to be home to another hip hop superstar. Kendrick Lamar won most of his doubters over with the release of his Section.80 album.
During this period of time, Kendrick Lamar was already working with Game. Given the relationship between Game and Dr. Dre, it was only a matter of time before K. Dot met the doctor. Upon meeting, Dr. Dre inducted Kendrick Lamar and Slim the Mobster. Signing a joint venture deal between his longtime Top Dawg Ent. label and Aftermath/Interscope, K. Dot began a new album.
Even with the success of Section.80, Kendrick Lamar decided to record a new album for it to serve as his debut album. In 2012, the official work on good kid, m.A.A.d. city began. Those who have heard the album say it has the makings of a classic. During his XXL cover story, Kendrick Lamar spoke on the difference between his 2011 and 2012 albums.

“I couldn’t tell you what type of sound or where I’ma be in the next five years as far as music,” he says of good kid, m.A.A.d city. “It’s a big difference from the next project compared to the last. And that’s what happened with this album. Going back to the neighborhood and going to different spots, chilling with my homeboys, put me back in that same space where we used to be, bringing back them thoughts, reminiscing how I was feeling. I got myself right back in that mode and I got inspired by that. So this album won’t sound like Section.80. Completely nothing like it.”
