LA Reid credits Mariah Carey for Jay-Z becoming Def Jam president
Music industry titan, L.A. Reid, has been around for the past four decades. In addition to being an executive at Island Def Jam and several labels under Sony, L.A. Reid co-founded LaFace Records with Babyface, cranking out hits. Now, he is back as the head of Epic Records.
In the mid-2000s, L.A. Reid oversaw Jay Z when he was president of the iconic Def Jam label. The move surprised many, but Jay Z developed the likes of Rihanna, Young Jeezy, and Ne-Yo during his three year run. Insight on how this came to be was recently shared.
L.A. Reid recently talked on the Rap Radar podcast about his history in the music industry. As the conversation went on, L.A. Reid explained that a conversation with Mariah Carey led to him hiring Jay Z to run Def Jam. Saying once he called Jay Z in, the look on Mariah’s face made it seem orchestrated, L.A. Reid said he took his job very seriously.
