Lil’ Kim was not the first female rapper to rise to prominence. However, Kim is the female rapper the current era of femcees have modeled themselves after. As a member of The Notorious B.I.G.’s Junior M.A.F.I.A., Kim rose to fame as the first lady. Despite warnings from Biggie, Lil’ Kim went hard core with her sexy appearance. While Lil’ Kim had a splashy 1996 debut, Jay-Z quietly debuted earlier in the same year. He was an independent artist.
Lil’ Kim, due to her association with Bad Boy Records, was one of the biggest names in hip hop. As a result, she was on many of the biggest hits of that era. Meanwhile, Kim was guaranteed to deliver hit singles every other year. During the summers of 1999, 2001, and 2003, Lil’ Kim had tremendous success. In 2005, she returned with what would be her final album, The Naked Truth. Her single, “Lighters Up,” would become her final charting hit single.
Lil’ Kim received a major shout out from Jay-Z, years later. On his “Roc Boys” single, Jay-Z shouted out Kim, and women like her, who held it down. During the 1990s and 2000s, Jay-Z and Lil’ Kim were consistently among the game’s hottest artists. In addition, Kim made a cameo in his “Give It 2 Me” music video. Now, two decades later, Jay-Z is one of music’s biggest executives. Every Grammy Sunday, he has the Roc Nation Brunch. This year, Kim showed up, hanging out with Jay and Beyonce.
