Mayor Johnson missed Officer Huesca’s funeral at family request

In a departure from tradition, Mayor Brandon Johnson did not attend the funeral of slain Officer Luis Huesca, which took place yesterday in Gage Park, following a request from the officer’s family. Officer Huesca tragically lost his life on April 21 while heading home from work.

The funeral, beginning at 10 a.m., saw a large turnout of mourning officers, supporters, and family members. It’s customary for city mayors and other dignitaries to attend funerals of fallen officers; however, early Monday, state Comptroller Susana Mendoza tweeted that Huesca’s mother had expressly asked her to inform Mayor Johnson that he was not welcome.

Despite initial plans suggested by his schedule, Mayor Johnson’s office confirmed shortly before the ceremony that he would respect the family’s wishes and abstain from attending. This decision highlights the sensitivities involved in public figures participating in private family events during times of grief.

This situation underscores the complex relationship between public officials and the communities they serve, especially in times of tragedy. As the city mourns Officer Huesca, the focus remains on honoring his service and supporting his family and colleagues during this difficult time.
