North Carolina Chick-Fil-A tried to pay teen employees with food
The Hendersonville, North Carolina location of Chick-Fil-A has come under fire. An investigation was launched by the US Department of Labor into Good Name 22:1 LLC of Hendersonville, NC. This is the corporate name of the Hendersonville Chick-Fil-A. It turns out, they were compensating their underage employees with food. In addition, they had the underage employees operating dangerous machinery.
On Twitter, people shared the since deleted photos from the company’s Facebook page. The photos included evidence of the Hendersonville, NC Chick-Fil-A having their underage employees working for free. As a result of the investigation, they pulled their photos from Facebook. However, there were people on Twitter who reshared it.
The Henderson, NC Chick-Fil-A location has been ordered to pay $7,000 to rectify the situation. In addition to having their child employees operating dangerous machinery, and tried to pay these same teenagers wit meal vouchers. The meal vouchers were a substitute for $325 worth of payment owed to employees. They used the volunteer program to compensate these underaged employees, who were operating the trash compactors. Now the Wage and Hour District Director spoke out.
“Protecting our youngest workers continues to be a top priority for the Wage and Hour Division,” said Wage and Hour Division District Director Richard Blaylock in Raleigh, North Carolina. “Child labor laws ensure that when young people work, the work does not jeopardize their health, well-being or educational opportunities. In addition, employers are responsible to pay workers for all of the hours worked and the payment must be made in cash or legal tender.”
