Off-duty Chicago area officer charged with retail theft, resigns

An off-duty police officer from Gurnee, Illinois, Antoine J. Smith, has resigned. This comes after he was charged with retail theft. The incident occurred at a well-known big-box store on Grand Avenue. Thus, drawing significant attention to issues of law enforcement integrity. Also, Gurnee is a town located in the suburbs of Chicago. In addition, it’s the location where an off duty cop lost his career.

On April 28, while off-duty, Smith was caught on security cameras engaging in ‘under-ringing’ at the store’s self-checkout. Under-ringing is a common form of retail theft. It involves failing to scan items. Also, it involves scanning them at incorrectly low prices. Alerted by the store’s loss prevention staff who monitored the situation live, local police were called to the scene.

The Gurnee Police Department responded quickly. As a result, apprehending Smith and charging him with retail theft. This action underlines the department’s commitment to uphold the law uniformly, regardless of an individual’s position. Smith had served as a detective for four years. However, he resigned from his role on the same day he was charged.

In a statement on Facebook, the department emphasized:

“The Gurnee Police Department upholds the highest standards of integrity and professionalism, and any actions contrary to these principles are met with swift and decisive action.”

They reiterated their dedication to serving the community with transparency and integrity.

As the case progresses, with Smith’s next court date scheduled for May 28. Now, the community and the police force are faced with the task of rebuilding trust. This incident serves as a reminder of the ongoing need for transparency and accountability within police departments nationwide.
