Taraji P. Henson makes history for a Black actress with “The Color Purple,” with her ninth number one film

Taraji P Henson scores 9th number 1 movie with The Color Purple

Taraji P. Henson broke down crying, when discussing her salary. While she’s iconic, Henson said she and other Black actresses do not get paid like their Caucasian counterparts. As a result, she said that she may give up on acting. However, Taraji P. Henson has made history with The Color Purple. This is the ninth movie she’s been a part of to debut at number one on the box office.

Taraji P. Henson proved she could actually be the top actress in the industry. On “Empire,” Taraji made herself a household name, doing primetime. Through half of “Empire’s” run, the show was the highest rated primetime drama in television history. During this span of time, Henson’s Cookie was the show’s most popular character. As a result, Taraji was Hollywood’s biggest name, during that time.

Taraji P. Henson continues to be one of the most entertaining actresses. On The Color Purple, she played the role of Shug Avery. This is the recreation of the 1985 classic. During the press run for this movie, she had breakdowns over her pay. Despite all of that, Taraji made history with this being her ninth number one film, fifth as a lead actress, and third as a top billed actress. This is a first for a Black actress.
