The legacy and influence of Tupac Shakur is one that grows with each new generation. As one of the most iconic music figures of all time, his story is one worthy of praise. Nearly twenty-five years after his passing, his journey was retold in the FX docuseries Dear Mama: The Saga of Afeni and Tupac Shakur. Detailing the close relationship between Tupac and his mother, the groundbreaking series recently won an Emmy nomination.
Tupac is arguably one of the greatest rappers of all time. Dominating rap and hip-hop music throughout the 1990’s, his impact is undeniable. Creating memorable singles like “California Love, “I Get Around, “Keep Your Head Up,” and “Dear Mama,” he’s reached platinum status even after his passing. Tupac’s personal life and unique family dynamic, also makes him legendary. Afeni Shakur, Tupac’s mother was making a name for herself long before she had any children. Her role in the black panther party while raising Tupac is a heavy focal point of the series.
In addition to highlighting Afeni Shakur’s journey, the five-part series shows how incredibly strong the bond between a mother and son can be. Shortly after its premier, Variety reported the show was the most watched premier of an unscripted show ever. This past Wednesday, the Emmy’s released their nomination list, with Dear Mama: The Saga of Afeni and Tupac Shakur listed. Directed by Allen Hughes, the series was nominated for Outstanding Documentary or Nonfiction series.
