The Hip-HopVibe.com Interview

  • Hey Greg! It’s a pleasure to be speaking with you today on behalf of Hip-HopVibe.com! Let’s jump right in — for those tuning in can you tell us who Greg DiNero is and where it all began?

Yeah, so my name is Greg dinero. I’m a New Jersey Tri-State area DJ, Producer, and father. I like to go out and do a whole bunch of stuff, but really where I got my start, I can remember the day specifically. Me and my father were in AC with a bunch of my cousins. That’s Atlantic City for those who don’t know, and I peeked up at the second floor, and there was like a DJ cutting it up on turntables. And I remember like, that was an obsession that Christmas was coming up. And that was a present that I wanted. I said dad, you know, turntables, turntables, turntables. So finally I got him. We got some like old vinyls, I think we had like Run DMC and Rob Base to start. I would just cut it up and I think I broke the needle like once a week. From there just you know, just never kind of left it was always a passion of mine. And then fast forward to like when the show Jersey Shore aired and everybody in their mother in New Jersey was like you know, dressing up like the cast and like teen night started and teenagers were like wanting to go to clubs. That’s actually where I got my start DJing for real like in front of people. So I did Surf Club, Karma, Bamboo, and I did Mansion in Brick when I was rolling with Teen Pulse Nightlife was the Hospitality Group that was running all the teen nights.

So that was like my first experience with actually DJing for a crowd and you know, reading a room and really learning how to, you know, DJ for real. And then where the production came in was I remember one night I was DJing at a teen night. And I played Robin S, “Show Me Love”, and I just saw the way people reacted to that melody. They ran to the dance floor, everybody knew it and they were all singing along. That’s when I was like, I’m really just hired to grow other people’s music so I think it would make sense for me to make my own music and kind of promote myself. So that’s when I kind of started wanting to make my own stuff. I started with like, remixes and stuff. Then just like recording the local guys, local rappers and stuff. And yeah, I started putting on my own music.

  • What’s your creative process like?

So my creative process with music, it’s all about creating a vibe. Because there’s been days where I had a long day, a stressful day, and I’ll go into the studio. And it kind of just gets even worse from there. Because if you feel that type of way it reflects in your music. So my creative process is just being around good people, you know, making sure the environment is right, making sure the vibe is good. However you’re really feeling is how your record is going to come out. So you know, if you’re in a party mood, you’ll make a party record. If maybe you’re upset, maybe you have a sadder record, you know, some r&b type stuff. But I think the number one thing for any creative process is just creating a good environment to work in. Also for some reason, I have to be showered and dressed really nice in order to make good music. It’s just a weird quirk of mine. But like, if I’m in like sweats and just kind of bumming it, I don’t really make good music.

  • Actually, that makes a lot of sense because people don’t realize that what you wear and how you appear also reflects in your psyche. So that actually makes sense. I’ve actually never heard anyone say that, but I could definitely see the correlation. With that being said, would you say that your creative process differs from production and DJing?

For me, it’s all about just having fun with everything you know? Like if you go into the studio and you’re like I want to make the best record ever but you know, you’re not having fun doing it. It’s just going to feel like work and you’re not going to get very far. So you know before we DJ we get the boys together we will have a good time and it’s just like a party but at the same time I’m working. It’s the same thing in the studio. We might have a little drink, you know what I mean? People who smoke, they smoke and then once you get the juices flowing everybody’s having a good time that’s really when the magic happens.

  • Who or what inspired your musical sound and style?

As far as inspiration goes, I’ve always been keen on Scott Storch’s production. Timbaland you know. Those guys are just people that completely came in and took over. It’s more than just you know who’s dominating in their field that inspires me you know, like even my boys, my crew inspires me you know? They inspire me to keep going, shout out to Tobias, Ricky flair, Apollo, Kevin Darba. All my guys know who they are. And just them showing out and showing love, and then when I make a beat them getting on it and coming correctly, that’s inspiring. Obviously, I’m a dad. So my children are the number one inspiration in my entire life. Nothing makes you go harder than having a kid. So it’s a bunch of things.

From desired DJ to prominent producer…

  • So speaking on being a father and fatherhood, how would you say you balance both work and fatherhood so well?

So you know, it’s actually funny for most people, like a stockbroker, or something like that, it is extremely hard to do that. But most of my work takes place at night. So I kind of devote my days to my children. Then by the time they’re tucked in and ready to go to bed, that’s really when my workday starts. Eight o’clock, nine o’clock, I’m just getting ready to go out club starts at 10-11PM. So, for me, balancing is really easy. I feel like you know, if you want to be around for your kids, and you still want to go hard at your work, you always find a way. But I think just for me, it kind of worked out in the way that, you know, I have my days devoted to my children and my nights devoted to my work.

  • I pressed play on some of your sizzling singles such as: “Traffic”, “Move Your Body”, & “Communication”. For fans getting familiar with you and your music, which released record of yours would you tell them to press play on to have the best idea of who you are as an artist and your artistry?

Well, if we’re talking streams, we gotta go run that “On Me” up right now. But, you know, that’s the newest one that we’re trying to get them streams up. But I think each one of those songs is a certain part of my life that you can listen to and figure out, you know, how I was feeling. The “Communication” record – that, to me, is the most special record. That was the first record I’ve ever had played by another DJ. Like I used to walk into places and just hear without even knowing the DJ. I’ve had that track spun on the radio. That was the first record I kind of really went really hard with so that one will always be special. That was my 21st summer, I had just turned 21. I was just hanging out USBs everybody and just emailing everybody and pulling up on everybody. That record is a reflection of my hard work that summer. So that one will always be special.

  • Also, your most recent release, “On Me”, could you walk us through the inspiration and creation of that raved release?

Yeah, so I was listening to some records because summer was approaching. And I was figuring out which records were working in the club consistently on a consistent basis. I knew the dancehall stuff is like something you could play at a barbecue, in the car, a club, a bar, like it just works anywhere. It’s not like house music. It’s not like rap music. It can appeal to everybody. And then I’m like, you know, the Spanish thing right now is really hot. So I knew Tobias through just going out and stuff.  I said, I think it would be really great if we get you know, like a strong voice and a Spanish person on a dancehall record.  I was also very aware that less was more with these records. You know, it wasn’t like these crazy beats, it was just kind of like a simple piano melody. So that’s what I did, I used the three chords, put the simple  Dancehall drums over it and we even actually recorded a couple of versions of that record. One with like, like a big heavy chorus that was layered and like big verses and I was just like there’s way too much going on right now. I said let’s kind of dumb it down. We all took a ride to the liquor store.

We were listening to Swae Lee “Unforgettable”. And those songs we noticed it was kind of just like a couple words, you let the beat ride and then a couple words like the beat, right. So  we just went back to Studio and regrouped and I think we had three or four versions of the song before we got to the one that we have. We all agreed, we’re like, this is good, you know, this is really good. Then all kinds of different things I threw in there. Like there’s an Indian woman in the background, like just homing. Like, I took an interview from a guy who’s saying the word confident just chopped it up. Like there’s all kinds of different stuff in there that kind of keeps you stimulated with the ADD Era we have.

  • Was there a moment that music saved your life? If so, how?

I think just about anytime that there was a situation in my life where I felt like I needed to just get away and you know, lift myself out of a dark place. Music has always been the answer. Obviously you know, I have children and stuff and they help tremendously with that. But, it always just helps to just get in the studio and get creative and put your thoughts not on paper, but on a project. Most people, some people write it down. Some people text it, some people talk to their girl. For me, it’s always just going into the studio and just creating something.

  • What was the turning point for you that helped you realize you were on your way to becoming successful?

Yes, I think there’s there’s two events I can remember specifically. I remember in high school, when I had kind of moved from just DJing to DJing and producing. I was on Twitter and I was just sending beats to everybody, everybody, everybody. It was like the link to my beats, my phone number, my email and it was like, get in touch with me.  I woke up at seven in the morning, New Jersey time to a FaceTime from I don’t know if you remember from Vine, the guy Stitches with all the tattoos. So he FaceTime me he’s like, Yo, I was like, half asleep. I had like, you know, wipe my face and make sure I was seeing this guy. We were stitches on the phone. He had recorded on like a bunch of my beats and stuff and he’s like, Yo, send some more. So I sent him more like the next day he had a video shot. Like a huge 20,000 production down in Miami and he’s like, I’m coming to Jersey on tour we’re going to hang out.

We wound up putting a couple of records out, this one did 100 million streams, and then did a couple million streams on that. And I was only 18 years old when that happened. So at the time, he was like the number one person on Vine, and I was pulling up to like high school house parties with them. You know, having parties hosted by him and going to parties with him and DJing for him and stuff. So that was like, nobody in my area was doing anything along those lines. So to me, that was like the point where I was like, wow, I could really do this, you know what I mean? If I could get him, I can get this one and that one, stuff like that. Obviously, being on the radio for the first time playing, and playing for like 5000 people at Harrah’s, multiple events have just made me keep it going. You know, there’s certain times where you’re kind of plateauing. And then you’ll just reflect on the last year and you’re like, Wow, this is exactly where I wanted to be last year.

  • Additionally, tell us about a valuable lesson you’ve learned during your come-up.

Yes. 100%. The most valuable lesson, I feel, for any industry and anybody out there is to rely on yourself and yourself only. The world does not care if you feel like you deserve it. You have to go hard for yourself. Keep a good group of people around you that support you. There are people that will go hard for you, but just don’t rely on anybody but yourself because everybody’s hungry. And everybody wants to get to that finish line.

  • Furthermore, could you summarize your debut project or single, and what inspired it.

So the first record I ever put out, like seriously, that was my record, not just something I had produced, was the “Communication” record. And, again, I built a studio in my mother’s garage and you know, I just wanted to get super creative. I made endless amounts of records and endless amounts of records. None of them I felt like I liked you know, they were just like, okay, and then finally I met a guy I felt like I clicked with. We both sat and wrote the record and produced the record, I think all in like an hour.  Like, it was quick, probably one of the quickest ones I’ve ever done. What inspired me to do that was just, you know, there were other people that I felt like we’re doing it that I was more talented than and more capable than, and I was like, why shouldn’t I just give it a shot and really just put a record out? You know, it doesn’t hurt to try?

What’s next?

  • Excited to hear more — what’s next for Greg DiNero in 2023?

So a lot more music, hoping to level up and DJ and other states. You know, I’ve really only attacked like LA, Jersey, New York a little bit and I’m trying to get you know, down south. Florida, maybe hit Central America. I just want to be everywhere. A lot of good music is coming out. A lot of good people. I’m working with a bunch of unreleased music with a bunch of big artists. Just hoping everything just kind of falls together this year.

  • Lastly, is there a message that you’d like to leave with fans?

A message that I would like to leave would be if you want to do something, just go do it! It doesn’t matter how crazy it sounds to people or how many people tell you that you can’t do it. Just go do it. Because I promise you even when you’re not where you want to be you’ll be happy doing what you love. Also, shout out to you and shout out to hip-hopvibe.com. Thank you so much for having me.
