After the Michael Jackson era, Bobby Brown and New Edition rose to fame. But, those who know the story know Bobby Brown soon went solo and, by 1988, was the biggest artist in music. In 1988, Bobby Brown released his sophomore album, Don’t Be Cruel, which included the “Don’t Be Cruel” single.

Bobby Brown released the single in May 1988 and it immediately took over radio and the charts. On Billboard, Bobby Brown ended up hitting the top ten and peaking at number eight. But, on the Hot Tracks, Bobby Brown ended up peaking at number one with “Don’t Be Cruel.”

With the Wednesday Throwback, a lot of various songs were looked back on, but there hadn’t been a Bobby Brown flashback. The past few years have shown him in more of a negative light, but Bobby Brown was once the king of hip hop and R&B. He was at his best in our latest Wednesday Throwback track, “Don’t Be Cruel,” from 1988.
