Jimmy Butler came in and helped return the Miami Heat to prominence. As a franchise, the Heat built a winning culture. However, the culture was only built around Dwyane Wade and LeBron James. Until 2020, they were the only players to lead the Heat to the NBA Finals. In 2019, Jimmy Butler was the Heat’s major free agent signing. A complicated NBA season ended with Butler leading the Heat to the Finals.
Jimmy Butler played an MVP caliber season in 2020. Obviously, Jimmy Butler was not going to win that award. However, Jimmy Butler was arguably two wins away from winning the 2020 NBA Finals MVP award. Instead, Jimmy Butler became the latest foil to LeBron James, in the NBA Finals. This was different from LeBron’s typical Finals rival, Stephen Curry.
Jimmy Butler would have been facing Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson if the Miami Heat won Game 7 at home. After Miami’s surprising Game 6 win, Udonis Haslem called out Draymond Green. Following the Warriors’ Game 5 win over Dallas, Draymond Green guaranteed the Boston Celtics would beat Miami. A motivated Heat team delayed this. Once Game 7 was over, a let down Jimmy Butler took it to the locker room.
