Had Klay Thompson been healthy through the duration of those Finals, the Golden State Warriors would likely have four championships.
Klay Thompson dealt with two freak injuries that cost him. As Klay Thompson rehabbed his injuries, the Golden State Warriors suffered. In 2020, only Draymond Green took the floor for most of the season, as the Warriors posted the NBA’s worst record. Towards the end of the 2020 season, Steph Curry came back, and was working himself back into form.
Klay Thompson was sidelined, as Steph Curry had an MVP-caliber season in 2021. The Warriors returned to the post season, losing to the Los Angeles Lakers and Memphis Grizzlies in the play-in. When Klay Thompson returned to play, the Warriors were tied with the Suns for the NBA’s best record. Eventually, the Warriors fell to the West’s third seed, behind the Suns and Grizzlies.
Klay Thompson helped lead the Warriors into the playoffs. In the first round, Klay Thompson and the Warriors beat the Denver Nuggets. When the Warriors faced Ja Morant’s Grizzlies, some critics said Memphis would win. Instead, the Warriors went up 3-1. While most expected a Game 5 Memphis home win, they were up by 55, at one point. In Game 6, Klay Thompson showed up and ate. Dillon Brooks tried it with Steph Curry, and Klay was right there.
