Back in 2005, the Houston hip hop scene began to emerge in a major way, but it’s been so long a lot of people forgot all of the players. The world credits Mike Jones, Paul Wall, Chamillionaire, and Slim Thug for this new era. But, Brooke Valentine was the first artist to actually break through.
Brooke Valentine was signed to Capitol Records in 2004 and released her debut album in 2005. The album was called Chain Letter and “Girlfight” was the first single. Guest appearances on the song were Big Boi and Lil Jon, two of the biggest Atlanta players in the 2004-2005 period.
An energetic song, “Girlfight” was released in the late winter of 2005. In the years since then, Brooke Valentine has been an afterthought, resurfacing a couple of years ago with a single featuring Scarface. But, this week, Hip Hop Vibe decided feature “Girlfight” as the Wednesday Throwback.
