In hip hop, many popular artists either have their own record labels or are granted their own record labels, but the success of their artists usually is minimal. When certain artists venture into legendary status, many question if their artists will have success off it. As legendary as Jay-Z was and as popular as Roc-A-Fella was, the label did not truly gain recognition until Kanye West found his own platinum success.

Kanye West, at the same time, had his own record label, G.O.O.D. Music. While he was establishing his own career, he was assisting Common with his comeback and developing John Legend. After Roc-A-Fella Records’ run ended, Kanye West focused on his G.O.O.D. Music label, signing Big Sean. Two years later, Big Sean gained superstardom, solidifying Kanye West’s track record as a label owner.

Big Sean is now preparing his second studio album and is one of the most-popular rappers out there, showing the world another side of Detroit hip hop. Recently, Big Sean was announced as one of the performers of Hot 97’s Summer Jam 2012. Hot 97’s DJ Cipha Sounds and Peter Rosenberg recently caught up with Big Sean and asked him about his performance, his relationship with Nicki Minaj, the controversy surrounding Chief Keef’s single, “I Don’t Like,” and much more.
