Over the weekend, it was revealed that Chris Brown’s upcoming American Music Awards performance was canceled. This was supposed to be a Michael Jackson tribute performance, in honor of the 40th anniversary of the iconic “Thriller” album. Brown went on to post rehearsal footage on Instagram, after news broke that this performance wouldn’t happen.

There has since been questions about why Brown’s Michael Jackson performance actually got scrapped. According to Puck’s Matt Belloni, ABC executives reportedly didn’t like  “the prospect of a convicted domestic abuser feting an alleged child molester on a Disney network.” The performance was cut off, as soon as execs found out about this plan.

However, the idea of Brown performing in general, was supposedly on the table. The tribute was also said to have been looked at as “radioactive.” As for Brown, he responded by saying that he only wanted to do the tribute performance

Despite the Michael Jackson tribute cancelation, Chris Brown did take home an award at the AMAs. This was for Favorite Male R&B Artist. He wasn’t in attendance, but Kelly Rowland accepted it on his behalf, and gave him his flowers.
