Whoopi Goldberg reveals battle with cocaine in new memoir

Whoopi Goldberg opens up about her past struggles with cocaine addiction in her candid new memoir. The book is titled Bits and Pieces: My Mother, My Brother, and Me. It’s set to release on May 7. The renowned actress and television host is known for her roles in Sister Act and Ghost. However, younger audiences know her from “The View.” She shares a raw account of her journey through the highs and lows of drug use during the 1980s.

In her book, Goldberg recounts how the social circles of Hollywood and New York City redefined ‘recreational drug use’ for her. She described scenes where drugs like Quaaludes and cocaine were freely available at parties. “I was greeted at the door with a bowl of Quaaludes,” Goldberg recalls. Also, noting the casual nature of drug consumption among the elite, where the police presence was virtually non-existent.

Despite maintaining her professional life on the surface, Goldberg admits the drug “started to kick [her] ass” over time. Thus, leading to severe hallucinations and a terrifying 24-hour period where she believed a monstrous creature was under her bed.

The turning point for Goldberg came during a particularly stark moment in a Manhattan hotel. A confrontation with a housekeeper and a mirror smeared with cocaine shocked her into reality. This incident prompted her to quit drugs cold turkey, a challenging decision that involved distancing herself from certain friends and social settings.

Goldberg’s story is not just a tale of personal struggle and recovery; it’s a stark reminder of the pervasive drug culture of the past and a hopeful message about the possibility of redemption.
